Why he might be annoying:

General Lee called him 'Bad Old Man' due to his short temper.
He fought for a State which supported slavery.
In the Seminole Wars, he killed Native Americans.
He gave criticism of his subordinates whenever possible, while ignoring his own errors.
He was a poor navigator and on one occasion lost his Brigade in the woods, costing the lives of 33 of his men.
He was a lawyer.
He never adapted back to civilian life post Civil War and carried a grudge against the Northern States till his death.

Why he might not be annoying:

He opposed secession.
He was one of General Lees' most trusted Generals.
He was wounded at Williamsburg while facing staggering odds.
He routed two thirds of the Union army at the Battle of Cedar Creek.
He refused surrender, choosing instead to flee to Mexico, Cuba and eventually Canada.
Upon returning to Virginia he received a Presidential pardon (1868).
