Why he might be annoying
During a campaign stop, he twice called S. R. Sidarth, an Indian American filming the event for Allen's opponent, 'macaca.' Macaca is a racial slur in French-speaking nations of North Africa. Coincidentally, Allen's mother speaks French and is from Tunisia (August 11, 2006).
A half dozen people have gone public with their memories of Allen frequently using the word 'nigger' as a college student.
Three people have gone on the record that after killing a deer hunting, Allen cut off the deer's head, asked for directions to the nearest home owned by a black man, and then shoved the head into an oversized mailbox.
As governor of Virginia, Allen initiated a meeting with the white supremacist Council of Conservative Citizens.
Even though he is pro-life, Allen owns stock in Barr Labs, the maker of the 'morning after' pill.
For five years, he failed to disclosure his ownership of stock options as required by Senate ethics rules (2002-06).
He chews tobacco.
Why he might not be annoying
Within two weeks, Allen called Sidarth to personally apologize for his remarks.
He defended himself against charges of racism by noting that his maternal grandfather was interred in a Nazi concentration camp.
He co-authored the law extending the ban on taxing the internet until 2007.
He co-sponsored a resolution that had the Senate formally apologize for never passing federal anti-lynching legislation.
He was class president his senior year in college.
He was in the falconry club in high school.
