Native American Icon

The Resume

    (1947- )
Born in Fort Hall Indian Reservation, Bingham County, Idaho
Birth name is LaNada Vernae Boyer
Tribal name is LaNada War Jack
    Native American rights activist
Member of the Shoshone Bannock Tribes
Organizer of the Occupation of Alcatraz in 1969

Why she might be annoying:

She has been identified by four different names, sometimes in tandem: LaNada Means, LaNada James, LaNada Boyer, and LaNada War Jack (confusing).
She is incorrectly reported as having been the first Native student admitted to and enrolled at the University of California — Berkeley (including on Wikipedia).
She allowed Jane Fonda to horn in on their protesting on Alcatraz.
Fonda later blindsided Dick Cavett on his own show by pulling LaNada into her guest spot at the last minute during the commercial break (March 13, 1970).
She ran on the Democratic ticket for the Nevada Assembly as a representative for District 34, but was defeated (1986).

Why she might not be annoying:

She was one of the founding members of the Native American Rights Fund.
As a leader of the Third World Strike at UC Berkeley in 1969, she was arrested for protesting.
She successfully led the drive to create the Native American Student Organization, becoming its chair.
She continued to work for the enforcement of U.S. treaty obligations and the recognition of Indian rights.
She won a seat on the Shoshone-Bannock Tribal Council in 1976, and served a two-year term.
She completed her PhD in political science at Idaho State University in 1999.
For years, Richard Oakes got sole credit for organizing the Alcatraz occupation, even though she was equally involved in the planning.
