Why she might be annoying:

She failed her 11+ exams and left school at age 16.
Her personal style -- close-cropped hair, black velvet dresses, silver boots, and enormous rings -- has been described as 'a gothic fairy godmother.'
She said children grow up too quickly now, leading to rejoinders that her books and their unflinching subject matter -- including divorce, homelessness and mental illness -- were contributing to the trend.

Why she might not be annoying:

She said, 'Sometimes I upset adult readers because I write from the child's point of view about parents who let them down. I can see that that might be unsettling.'
Philip Pullman said, 'Her appeal is extraordinary and I think it's due to the fact that she writes directly -- never down.'
She placed 14 titles in the BBC's 'Big Read' survey of favorite books.
She once signed books for seven and a half hours. (Since having a pacemaker installed, she has limited book signings to 200 people.)
She said, 'If a child comes up to me and says I used to hate books but I've read one of yours and it has really turned me on to reading, then that is the most worthwhile thing of all.'
