Volleyball Player

The Resume

    (May 7, 1957- )
    Born in Santa Monica, California
    Christopher St. John 'Sinjin' Smith
    Professional beach volleyball player
Three-time World Volleyball championship winner (1989 - 1992), twice with partner Randy Stoklos
Won his first Career Open at the 1977 Rosecrans Open, with partner Mike Norman
Earned fifth place at 1996 Olympics in Beach Volleyball, with partner Carl Henkel
92 Wins under the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP); briefly served as President of the AVP
Co-Owner of Sideout Sport, in Pasadena, and Smither's Active Wear, in Santa Monica
In his retirement, runs Beach Volleyball Camps, with former partner Randy Stoklos

Why he might be annoying:

He guest-starred on an episode of Magnum P.I.
He also acted in the god-awful Peter Horton-C. Thomas Howell Volleyball B-flick, 'Side Out.'
He broke off his partnership with Karch Kiraly when Kiraly opted to focus on making the Olympic team.
He briefly held the 'King of the Beach' title (coveted by some, we guess...)
He was an icon when Baywatch-style 'surf culture' was chic in the early 90's.
He repeatedly committed to participate in the White Thorn Lodge's 'Naked Volleyball Superbowl' event, but backed out at the last minute each time.

Why he might not be annoying:

He started playing in tournaments at the age of 15.
    He married supermodel Patty Robinson.
Led UCLA's Volleyball team to two consecutive/back-to-back National Championships; earning All-American Honors both times (1978-1979).
His book, 'Kings of the Beach,' inspired a Nintendo video game of the same name.
He was inducted into UCLA Sports Hall of Fame, in 1991, making him the first volleyball player to receive such an honor.
He was voted Best Defensive Player by the AVP in three consecutive years (1990, 1991, 1992).
He hit the $1 million mark with career prize earnings during the 1992 season, becoming only the 2nd player to reach that mark.
He put the sport of Volleyball on the map (previously the notion of men playing the sport was - and kind of still is - considered 'wimpy').
In his retirement, he started training and racing horses.
He is on the Board of Directors for the Big Brothers of America organization (and is active with numerous local civic organizations, clinics and charities in his area).
