Leader of the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra (1935-1953)
Recorded 'On Treasure Island,' 'Alone,' 'You,' 'Marie,' 'The Big Apple,' 'Satan Takes a Holiday,' 'Indian Summer,' 'In the Blue of the Evening' and 'How Are Things in Glocca Morra?'

    Co-hosted 'Stage Show' on CBS

Why he might be annoying:

He frequently fought with his brother Jimmy and other band members.
He quit the Dorsey Brother’s Orchestra just as it was poised to become the biggest band in the country.
He was demanding perfectionist and fired musicians easily if he didn't like their playing.
He never had confidence in his musical skills.
He was charged with assault after he beat up actor Jon Hall and tried to throw him off an apartment balcony (1944).
He punched out Benny Goodman in another fight.
When he hired Frank Sinatra as singer, he signed him to a life-long contract where 33 percent of Sinatra's professional earnings went to Tommy.
He refused to let Sinatra out of the contract until the American Federation of Radio Artists pressured him to do so.
His death was similar to Jimi Hendrix's in that he died choking on his vomit after overdosing on sleeping pills.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was known as the 'Sentimental Gentleman of Swing.'
He recorded over 90 songs that peaked in the top ten between 1935 and 1946, and recorded dozens more hits after that.
He hired some of the best jazz musicians in the country.
His band consistently ranked as one of the top two or three orchestras in the country.
Frank Sinatra gained most of his early success from singing with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra.
Sinatra said he learned breath control by watching Tommy play the trombone.
He reconciled with Jimmy during the filming of a biopic about their lives.
Elvis Presley made his national television debut on the Dorsey's 'Stage Show.'
