    Six-time Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Player of the Year (1974-76,1981-83)
    Won 43 PBA Tour titles
    Inducted into the PBA Hall of Fame (1981)
    Died after falling down a flight of stairs at a friend's house

Why he might be annoying:

    He was nicknamed 'Square Earl' for his crew-cut and horn-rimmed glasses.
    Although he had worked as a pinsetter as a boy, he did not bowl until he was in his 20s.
    After failing to win any events during his first year on the PBA tour (1963), he dropped out for six years.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was nicknamed 'the Machine' for his consistency and accuracy.
    He was the first bowler to earn $100,000 in a year (1975) and $1,000,000 in a career (1982).
    For its 50th anniversary (2008), the PBA named him the greatest bowler of the PBA era.
