The Resume

    (April 25, 1927-March 24, 2020)
    Born in Nismes, Marne, France
Writer and primary artist of Oumpah-pah (1958–1962) and Asterix (1959– )
Creator of the Editions Albert-Rene publishing company (1979)
Knight of the Legion d’honneur (1985)
Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame inductee (2005)
Knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion (2007)

Why he might be annoying:

He had a particular fondness for creating pumped-up muscle-headed characters (Oumpa-pah and Obelix, for example).
Following Rene Goscinny’s death, he was only inclined to put out one full adventure every two to five years.
He sued the German publisher of an Asterix parody into bankruptcy, which made his decision to sell Albert-Rene richly ironic.
Having sold his share of Albert-Rene to another publisher, his daughter – who owned some 40 percent of the company – likened the move to throwing open ‘the gates of the Gaulish village… to the Roman Empire.’ (In plain English, she called him a sellout.)
He shot back: ‘To be accused by my own daughter of being an old man, manipulated and deluded in his insatiable greed by the gnomes of finance, is already quite undignified.’

Why he might not be annoying:

He was born to Italian immigrants (becoming a French citizen in 1934).
He originally planned to be an aircraft mechanic.
Except for having it located near a body of water, he was fully entrusted with the decision as to where to locate the village where Asterix was to reside (he chose Brittany).
While working with Goscinny, he was able to put out two Asterix adventures per annum.
UNESCO honored him as the #10 French language author and #3 French language comics author in terms of translation (the latter behind Herge and his own partner).
He dedicated ‘Asterix and the Falling Sky’ to his brother Bruno, who died in 2004.
