Baseball Player

The Resume

    (August 31, 1875-February 24, 1926)
    Born in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
Pitcher for the Philadelphia Athletics (1901-14), St. Louis Terriers (1915) and St. Louis Browns (1916-17)
    326-194 win-loss record
    2.35 ERA
    2,246 strikeouts
    Pitched 69 shutouts
Inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee (1946)

Why he might be annoying:

He played for the Gettysburg College baseball team without actually attending the school. (Admittedly, a fairly common practice at the time.)
He played a season for the St. Louis Terriers of the Federal League. Since some baseball reference books don’t consider the Federal League a major league, he is sometimes credited with only 305 career wins.
He spent a long time between pitches adjusting his cap and uniform.
He would rarely throw to a base to keep a runner from getting a lead, explaining, ‘There are only so many pitches in this old arm, and I don't believe in wasting them throwing to first base.’
He suffered a nervous breakdown during the 1917 season.

Why he might not be annoying:

He skipped over the minor leagues, going straight from Gettysburg College’s team to the A’s.
In the offseason, he was a tour guide at the Gettysburg Battlefield.
He was the first left-handed pitcher to reach the 200-win and 300-win plateaus.
Fellow Hall of Famer Eddie Collins said, Eddie Plank was not the fastest, not the trickiest and not the possessor of the most stuff. He was just the greatest.’
