    He joined the Communist party.
    He was married four times, including twice to actress Sarah Miles.
    He smoked up to 80 cigarettes a day until he suffered a stroke in 1979.
    He was described as 'brusque and demanding' by producer David Puttnam.
    The only film he directed, 'Lady Caroline Lamb' (1972), failed with critics and at the box office.
    The play that he considered his best, 'Gentle Jack,' was one of his few flops.
    He served with the RAF during World War II.

    He and Sarah Miles reunited after joining family therapy with their son Thomas, as part of Thomas' treatment for heroin addiction.
    He suffered a stroke that left him paralyzed on the right side of his body (1979), and required two years of therapy before he could walk and talk again.
