The Resume

    (March 7, 1671-December 28, 1734)
    Born in Glengyle, United Kingdom
Usually known simply as Rob Roy
Scottish Gaelic name was Raibeart Ruadh
Son of clan chieftain Donald Glas MacGregor

Why he might be annoying:

He is inevitably known as Scotland’s Robin Hood.
His family had a history of participating in violent raids.
He took part in the Jacobite uprising to restore King James II to the throne.
He was a cattle rustler and extorted protection payment from landowners.
Many Scots claim without proof to be descended from him.
The popular 1995 film ‘Rob Roy,’ starring Liam Neeson, sanitized his life story.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was an honest cattleman until he was cheated by an employee and then bankrupted by his creditor Lord Montrose.
    He escaped capture several times.
He became a folk hero while still living, thanks in part to Daniel Defoe's biography ‘Highland Rogue’ (1723).
His popularity led to a royal pardon in 1726.
His son Robin appears in Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel ‘Kidnapped’ (1886).
His gravestone reads ‘MacGregor Despite Them.’
