Military Personnel
    (September 23, 1890-February 1, 1957)
    Born in Breitenau, Germany
Commander of the Sixth Army (1941-43)
Surrendered to the Soviets during the Battle of Stalingrad (January 31, 1943)
Became a police inspector in Dresden, East Germany, after WWII
He tried to join the Imperial Navy but was rejected.
He refused to disobey Hitler's orders and attempt a breakout from Stalingrad, effectively dooming his army.
He surrendered the day after being promoted to Field Marshal.
Asked by a journalist at the Nuremberg Trials how the POWs from Stalingrad were doing, he told the reporter to tell their relatives that the soldiers were well, even though more than half had already died in a march to Siberian prison camps.
During the blitz in France, Heinz Guderian described him as 'brilliantly clever, conscientious, hard working, original and talented.'
Due to the fuel shortages that had constantly hampered the Stalingrad campaign, his chances of breaking out even if he had tried were rather iffy.
He said of his promotion, 'It looks like an invitation to commit suicide, but I will not do this favor for [Hitler].'
After two of his friends were executed for allegedly taking part in the July 20 assassination plot against Hitler, he became a vocal critic of Nazi Germany.
In response, Hitler ordered his family arrested.
