His nomination to be a district court judge was rejected by the Senate Judiciary Committee due to his 'gross insensitivity' on racial issues (1986).
He called the NAACP 'un-American' and 'Communist inspired.'
Several colleagues reported that he said he 'used to think they [the Ku Klux Klan] were okay' until he found out some of them were 'pot smokers.'
A black lawyer testified that Sessions called him 'boy' and warned him 'Be careful what you say to white folks.'
He was one of only nine Senators to vote against John McCain's anti-torture ammendment.
He complained, 'The civil libertarians among us would rather defend the Constitution than protect our nation's security.'

He was a captain in the US Army Reserves.
He claimed his remarks about the NAACP and KKK were made in jest.
He authored the law to increase the payment received by families of soldiers killed in combat from $12,000 to $100,000.
For fans of irony, he was elected to the Senate to succeed Howell Heflin, who had voted against his nomination to the district court.
Even more ironically, he was named to the Senate Judiciary Committee.
