    She wed thrice.
    She separated from fellow poet Paul Laurence Dunbar, but he died before they could divorce.
    Her lesbian affairs led to the dissolution of their marriage.
    She divorced second husband Dr. Henry Callis, who was 12 years her junior.
    She was a prolific writer and leader of the Harlem Renaissance.
    On one occasion, Paul beat her so severely she spent several days recuperating in the hospital.
    Her works touched on racism, classism and women's sexuality.
    She was a skilled and energetic orator.
    She fought for Civil Rights and Women's Rights, including the 1922 Dyer Anti-Lynching Bill.
