    Won Oscars for scoring 'Alexander's Ragtime Band' (1938), 'Tin Pan Alley' (1940), 'The Song of Bernadette' (1943), 'Mother Wore Tights' (1947), 'With a Song in My Heart' (1952), 'Call Me Madam' (1953), 'Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing' (1955), 'The King and I' (1956) and 'Camelot' (1967)
    Also composed scores for 'Wuthering Heights' (1939), 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame' (1939), 'The Mark of Zorro' (1940), 'How Green Was My Valley' (1941), 'The Keys of the Kingdom' (1944), 'Gentleman's Agreement' (1947), 'All About Eve' (1950), 'How to Marry a Millionaire' (1953), 'Anastasia' (1956), 'The Diary of Anne Frank' (1961), 'How the West Was Won' (1962) and 'Airport' (1970)
    Composed the fanfare that accompanies the 20th Century Fox logo

    He started in vaudeville at age seven, billed as 'The Marvelous Boy Pianist.'
    He nepotistically had Fox hire his brothers Lionel and Emil to score films.
    He was married three times and divorced twice.
    He lent his name to Mad's Alfred E. Neuman.
    He was nominated for Oscars for 20 consecutive years (1938-57), including a nine-year stretch (1939-46) in which he was nominated for two or more films each year.
    He developed the Newman system, a technique for synchronizing the performance of the score with the film that is still used today.
    He discovered film composers Bernard Herrmann and John Williams.
