She dropped her plans to study the piano because she afraid of performing in public.
She was a perfectionist who would spend months on a single poem.
John Ashbery called her ‘a writer’s writer’s writer.’
She spent much of her life wandering from city to city and country to country.
She was a heavy drinker in later years.
Some of her friends shunned her after her lover’s suicide.
Her father died when she was a baby, and her mother was permanently institutionalized when she was five.
At six she was taken from her beloved Canadian grandparents by her Bostonian relatives.
When Vassar College's literary journal refused to publish her, she and her friends founded a rival magazine.
She wrote ‘Visits to St. Elizabeth’s’ about Ezra Pound, who was confined there.
She won several poetry prizes but said such awards did not mean much.
Much admired for her precise, understated poetry, her critical reputation rose slowly but steadily.
