Why he might be annoying
He sometimes resembles actor Robert Duvall.
While working as a junior chemical engineer for GE in 1960, an explosion at the factory under his management blew off the roof of the facilities.
He was almost fired for that episode.
He planned to quit his job as junior engineer because of his dissatisfaction with the raise offered to him and was unhappy with the bureaucracy he observed at GE.
As head of GE, he earned a reputation for brutal candor in his meetings with executives.
He was also notorious for firing the bottom ten percent of his managers while giving those in the top twenty percent ridiculously lavish bonuses.
He was dubbed 'Neutron Jack' for eliminating employees while leaving buildings intact.
He is twice divorced.
His income and assets came under scrutiny during his divorce from his second wife Jane in 2001.
He has gained a reputation for being unfriendly to the middle class.
He is a global warming skeptic despite saying that every business must embrace green products and green ways of doing business whether you believe in global warming or not 'because the world wants these products.'
He caused a firestorm of criticism after accusing the US Bureau of Labor Statistics for 'manipulating' the unemployment in favor of President Barack Obama during the 2012 US election after it was revealed that the rate dropped from 8.1 to 7.8 percent.
Why he might not be annoying
He graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst with a degree in chemical engineering.
He was the youngest person to become chairman and CEO GE at the time of his promotion.
He was instrumental in GE purchasing television network NBC.
In 1999, he was named 'Manager of the Century' by Forbes magazine.
He co-authored a book about management called 'Winning,' which was a New York Times bestseller.
Upon winning the Best Documentary Short Oscar for 'Deadly Deception: General Electric, Nuclear Weapons and Our Environment,' producer and director Debra Chasnoff dissed Welch in her speech.
