He sang baritone in a barbershop quartet with his brother, Shemp Howard (1913).
He was introverted, serious and very nervous, finding it hard to relax.
He smoked cigars most of his life.

Why he might not be annoying:

The Beatles copped his hairstyle.
Despite his tough demeanor on screen, at home he was quite softhearted.
His first thoughts were for his family and he dreaded the separation caused by long shooting schedules and personal appearance tours.
After the loss of his brothers, Curly Howard and Shemp Howard, he admitted he had mixed feeling about watching his brothers in television reruns of their Three Stooges comedies.
His wife, Helen Schonberger, was a cousin of the late Harry Houdini.
