    Appeared in 65 films, including ‘Jwar Bhata’ (1944), ‘Jugnu’ (1947), ‘Andaz’ (1949), ‘Aan’ (1952), ‘Devdas’ (1955), ‘Azaad’ (1955), ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ (1960), ‘Ram Aur Shyam’ (1967), ‘Kranti’ (1981), ‘Shakti’ (1982), ‘Karma’ (1986), ‘Saudagar’ (1991), and ‘Qila’ (1998)
    Member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament (2000-06)

Why he might be annoying:

    He adopted a stage name out of fear of his father, who disapproved of acting.
    He suffered depression from starring in numerous tragedies until his psychiatrist suggested that he take on some lighter roles.
    David Lean offered him the role of Sherif Ali in ‘Lawrence of Arabia,’ but he turned it down. (The role went to Omar Sharif, making him an international star.)
    He went into an extended box office slump during the 1970s.

    He and actress Saira Banu were married for 55 years.
    He brought method acting to Bollywood before Marlon Brando popularized it in Hollywood.
    He learned how to play the sitar for films.
    He won eight Filmfare Awards for Best Actor. (A record later tied by Shahrukh Khan.)
    He received Pakistan’s highest civilian award, the Nishan-e-Imtiaz, making him the only Indian citizen to be so honored (1998).
    When he died, his film ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ was still India’s highest-grossing film when adjusted for inflation.
