Why he might be annoying:

For his honeymoon, he took his wife on a three-month tour of hospitals in France and Germany.
During an operation on Queen Victoria, his assistant accidentally sprayed the disinfectant in the royal patient's face.
Listeria, a bacteria responsible for food-borne illnesses, was named for him, which seems an odd tribute to a man who spent his life eliminating bacteria.

Why he might not be annoying:

His techniques reduced the mortality rate for amputations from nearly 50% in 1865 to less than 5% by the time of his death.
He improved the methods for mastectomy and repairing fractured kneecaps.
He was one of the twelve original members of the Order of Merit (1902).
