    Partner of the composer Benjamin Britten Sang in many Britten operas, including 'Peter Grimes,' 'Billy Budd,' 'Death in Venice,' 'The Turn of the Screw,' 'Albert Herring' and 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'
    Sang Schubert lieder, Bach cantatas, Puccini's 'Turandot' and Stravinsky's 'Oedipus Rex'

    Many critics disliked his voice.
    One described it as 'slightly weird.'
    Another said: 'He had one good note - E-flat a third above middle C.'
    He dropped out of Oxford.
    Many people assume his name is pronounced 'PAIRS,' but it's actually 'PEERS.'
    He and Benjamin Britten had a long, happy relationship.
    Britten wrote much of his greatest music for him.
    He wrote poetry.
    His diction was superb.
