    Died in Dallas, Texas
    Died of prostate cancer at age 75
    Head coach of the San Francisco 49ers (1968-75) and the New Orleans Saints (1978-80)
    NFL Coach of the Year (1970)
    His career record was 69-82-5.
    Following making three consecutive playoff appearances between 1970 and 1972, the team went 16-25 the last three seasons.
    Niner fans started a revolt and cheered when his firing was announced.
    His tenure in New Orleans was plagued with inconsistency.
    He was fired by the Saints following an 0-12 start.
    He established himself as a coach under Tom Landry.
    He turned a Niner team that was a perennial laughingstock into a gradual contender.
    He was one of the first notable coaches to begin the trend of wearing the suit and tie on the sidelines.
    He guided the Niners to a 10-3-1 record which earned him Coach of the Year honors.
    He and his son Mike are the fifth father-son tandem in NFL history to coach the same team.
