    (September 16, 1948- )
    Born in Oregon City, Oregon
    Birth name was Susan Dunsrud
Portrayed Roxanne Melman on L.A. Law (1986-93)
She said that growing up she had no friends and spent her free time 'sewing and watching Lawrence Welk.'
While attending convent school, she considered becoming a nun, but when she told the mother superior that she had received 'the calling,' she got the reply, 'Dear, I think that was a wrong number.'
Her second marriage, to an 'L.A. Law' soundman, broke up in a little over two years.
Her acting career outside of 'L.A. Law' did not amount to much.
She admitted that portraying Roxanne could be repetitive: 'How many times can you walk into a room and say, 'Arnie, there's someone on the phone for you'?'
She was adopted by her paternal grandmother after her parents divorced.
Her first husband was a Green Beret and Vietnam vet who died in a motorcycle accident (1970).
'L.A. Law' co-creator Terry Louise Fisher admitted that the character of Roxanne Melman was originally 'ill-conceived and badly written' and succeeded only because of Ruttan's performance, especially her chemistry with Corbin Bernsen.
She was nominated for four Emmys and two Golden Globes as Best Supporting Actress for 'L.A. Law.'
She had no problem playing the frump amid the flashy 'L.A. Law' cast: 'I think people are relieved it's not Joan Collins playing Roxanne.'
She started an interior decoration business (2000).
