Why he might be annoying
At age 12, he broke his right elbow playing football and hid the injury, which never healed properly, leaving the arm several inches shorter than the left and with limited mobility.
After dropping 40 pounds when Red Wings GM Jack Adams ordered him to lose weight, he became surly and withdrawn.
His wife divorced him over his philandering, drinking and physical and verbal abuse.
After they had been drinking, he and Rangers teammate Ron Stewart got into an argument about the expenses for a house they had rented on Long Island.
During the ensuing scuffle, he fell over Stewart's bent knee, and died from injuries to his liver.
Why he might not be annoying
His goaltending talents were so evident that at age 14, a Red Wings scout had him work out with the team.
In only his second NHL season, a rival general manager hailed him as the 'best goalie ever.'
Decades of bending over in the net left him with a permanent stoop and unable to sleep more than two hours at a stretch.
His career record of 103 shutouts was unsurpassed until 2009, when Martin Brodeur bested the mark.
He was honored on a Canadian postage stamp (2001), despite having become a US citizen in 1959.
