Why he might be annoying
He was a German prince who became a Danish prince who became a Greek king.
He was not the first choice of the Greek people; in a plebiscite, 95% of the voters backed Queen Victoria's son, Prince Alfred.
He was accepted as king by the Greeks mostly because of pressure from the Great Powers - Britain, France and Russia.
Six weeks after his death, his assassin 'fell' to his death from a police station window.
Why he might not be annoying
Seeking to avoid the mistakes of his predecessor, he quickly learned Greek in addition to his native German and Danish.
He was related by marriage to the rulers of Britain, Russia and Prussia and used the connections to gain European support for Greek territorial expansion.
He presided over the first modern Olympics (1896).
He adopted the motto, 'My strength is the love of my people.'
