Why they might be annoying:

They got their name from the World Hockey Association's abbreviation - WHAlers.
Their home arena was attached to a shopping mall.
They had the awful 'Brass Bonanza' as their theme song.
They suffered many years of futility.
They had the NHL's drama king Ulf Samuelsson on their roster for many seasons.
Detroit goalie Chris Osgood scored a goal against them (1996).
They traded Chris Pronger after two seasons before he established himself as an All-Star defenseman.
They almost traded Pat Verbeek for Doug Gilmour.
They were the only team in the NHL to wear a predominantly green uniform and those awful Cooperall pants.
They gave up three first round draft selections to acquire Glen Wesley from Boston, when two of the three picks turned out to be future All-Stars Kyle McLaren & Sergei Samsonov.
They were often seen as the little brother team to the Boston Bruins among New England hockey fans.
Their owner Peter Karmanos moved the team because he felt Hartford wasn't a suitable NHL market.

Why they might not be annoying:

They had great rivalries with the New York Rangers and Boston Bruins.
They had one of the classiest NHL players on their roster in Ron Francis.
They had Gordie Howe and his sons Mark & Marty on their roster all at the same time.
They gave Paul Maurice a chance to become a head coach at age 28 (1995).
They had a loyal fanbase throughout their lean years.
