Religion associated with the descendants of slaves (especially those from Nigeria) in the Caribbean, particularly Cuba
AKA Regla da Ocha, La Regula Lucumi, and Lukumi
Features complex rituals and a developed hierarchical clergy/priesthood
Its not real; its rituals will not give you anything and its priests have no special powers.
Its origins are tragic; it developed to give oppressed slaves a sense of power over their lives.
It is frequently mistaken for voodoo, which it closely resembles.
Its practitioners engage in animal sacrifice and smoke cigars and drink alcohol as part of their rituals.
Its history is interesting. It developed from the religion of the African Yoruba tribe (its liturgical religion is Lucumi, the language of the Yoruba tribe) and many of its rituals and theological points can be traced very directly back to the Yoruba tribe.
Its followers have suffered much oppression under Castro's atheistic communist dictatorship.
Singer Desi Arnaz's biggest hit 'Babalu' is the name of a Santeria god.
It endorses what most people would consider common morality.
They don't have any televangelists and none of their followers have ever flown airplanes into the side of skyscrapers.
Its priests are supposed to be wise and moral.
