    Also wrote 'Day of Infamy (1957),' 'The Good Years (1960),' 'Peary and the Pole (1963),' 'The Dawn's Early Light (1972),' 'The Lonely Vigil (1977),' 'The Past That Would Not Die (1968),' 'The Miracle of Dunkirk (1982)' and 'The Night Lives On (1986),' a sequel to 'A Night to Remember'
    Died at age 84 from Parkinson's Disease in Manhattan

Why he might be annoying:

    The Titanic was his obsession since he was a little boy.
    Though a graduate of Yale Law School, he decided not to practice law.
    Instead, he went into advertising.
    He was a pack rat, his home cluttered with old news clippings and other ephemera.
    He was a lifelong bachelor.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He served in the OSS during World War II.
    His writing style made tedious historical facts interesting.
    He was a stickler for attention to detail, tracking down over 60 Titanic survivors.
    'A Night to Remember' is considered THE definitive telling of the Titanic disaster.
    He received numerous awards in recognition of his dedication to US history.
    He continued to write until his health failed.
    James Cameron hired him as a technical consultant for his 1997 blockbuster 'Titanic.'
