Why he might be annoying:

He was passed over in the 2004 NFL draft.
The Cincinnati Bengals signed him up one day before the last game of the 2004 season (which he did not play in) and waived him before the start of the 2005 season.
He was signed by the Baltimore Ravens, but was placed on injured reserve and missed the entire 2006 season.
For a while between the end of his football career and his filmmaking career taking off, he returned home to live with his parents.

Why he might not be annoying:

He graduated from the University of Akron as the school’s all-time leading receiver.
He said about making movies, ‘This is ten times harder than trying to make it into the NFL.’
His ‘9 Rides’ was the first film shot entirely on an iPhone 6s.
The Kickstarter campaign he launched for ‘Hair Love’ raised over $300,000, the largest amount raised through the platform for a short film.
In 2012, he tweeted the prediction, ‘I’m gonna be nominated for an Oscar one day. Already claiming it.’
He dedicated his Oscar to the late Kobe Bryant, the only previous pro athlete to win an Oscar (also for Best Animated Short Film, for ‘Dear Basketball’ in 2018).
