He was typecast as English eccentrics.
Because he went prematurely bald, he often played characters older than himself; for example, in 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,' he played Dick Van Dyke's father despite being six months younger than Van Dyke.
He said, 'I tried a toupee once, but it looked like a dead moth on a boiled egg.'

He won the Burma Star for his service in World War II.
He was married to Eileen Mary Walsh for 59 years until his death.
