Why they might be annoying:

They claim to have named themselves after a nickname for the melodica. (And the Hooters restaurant chain really named itself after owls.)
They became much bigger in Europe than the US.
Frequent Biblical references in their songs led to rumors that they had morphed into a Christian rock band.
Hyman said, 'The way we play and sing, we call it Hooterization,' while Bazilian said, 'All we gotta do is fight for the right to Hoot.'

Why they might not be annoying:

They were named best new band in the Rolling Stone readers' poll (1985).
They were the opening band for the Philadelphia portion of Live Aid.
Hyman was nominated for the Song of the Year Grammy for co-writing Cyndi Lauper's 'Time After Time,' while Bazilian was nominated for writing Joan Osborne's 'One of Us.'
