The Resume

    (2006- )
Born in Cuddebackville, Orange County, New York
Tagline is ‘Reviving Five Thousand Years of Civilization’
Created in NYC by Chinese deportees based in North America
Touring companies of dancers, musicians, and vocalists of East Asian lineage

Why they might be annoying:

They began with such titles as ‘Chinese Spectacular,’ ‘Holiday Wonders,’ ‘Chinese New Year Splendor’ and their former name of ‘Divine Performing Arts.’
Red China has used political pressure on its embassies to disrupt or cancel performances outright.
Critics have charged a ‘Disneyfied version of Chinese culture’ and failure to explicitly state the inspiration for their performances (Legend of Hua Mulan mean anything?).
Like Red China, its embassy in Canada also views it as ‘propaganda’ to ‘smear China’s image’ and damage relationships.
Citing case-by-case considerations, Hong Kong refused entry visas for their production crew, which led to a sold-out show being annulled (2010).

Why they might not be annoying:

They incorporate traditional instruments in with a Western philharmonic.
Their website (shenyunperformingarts.org) is vividly detailed in text and pictures.
Many of the vocalists co-composed the music for their numbers.
They expanded to three troupes – each with at least 60 members – that can perform simultaneously on different continents.
Some performers received the National First Class Performer award from the Chinese Ministry of Culture.
A party chairman in Hong Kong blasted the visa denial as a black stain on its freedoms and reputation as an open society.
They demonstrate that – despite decades of Communism that all but obliterated their traditional culture – its values and reverence for the gods live on.
