They were undemocratic and corrupt.
Some compare them to the mafia and corporate monopolies.
They hired assassins to murder the heads of rival families.
They taxed the public heavily.
They gave themselves pompous names like ‘the Great’ and ‘the Magnificent.’
Lorenzo the Magnificent allowed the religious maniac Savonarola to take over Florence.
They excommunicated Martin Luther from the Catholic Church.
People were always trying to poison them.

Why they might not be annoying:

They were not aristocrats, yet they ruled a powerful Italian state for over 250 years.
They started out as humble businessmen.
They tried to balance power between Florence and the other city-states.
They provided the public with many important services.
They were well read.
They commissioned many of the greatest artists of the Renaissance, including Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, Donatello, Botticelli and Rubens.
