The Resume

    (January 3, 1956-October 2, 1964)
Aired on NBC (1956-60) and ABC (1960-64)
    Hosted by Jack Bailey
Premise: Four female contestants described their recent hardships, with the audience then choosing a winner with their applause

Why Queen for a Day might be annoying:

The show was accused of exploiting human misery for ratings.
Fashion commentary was interspersed between the contestants' sob stories.
A revival attempt in 1969 lasted only one season.
The show was sexist: surely there were men leading miserable lives who wanted to be 'King for a Day.'

Why Queen for a Day might not be annoying:

Before moving to TV, it was a successful radio show for eleven years (1945-56).
Bailey's sign-off was 'Make every woman a queen, for every single day.'
Today, when people let themselves be exploited on TV without even the payoff of fabulous prizes, the show seems quaint.
