The Resume

    (December 5, 1947- )
    Born in Maywood, California
    Guitarist, bassist, and vocalist
Member of the bands Buffalo Springfield (1968) and Poco (1968-70,1989-92)
Formed the duo Loggins and Messina with Kenny Loggins
With Loggins recorded the albums ‘Sittin’ In’ (1971), ‘Loggins & Messina’ (1972), ‘Full Sail’ (1973), ‘On Stage’ (1974), ‘Mother Lode’ (1974), ‘So Fine’ (1975), ‘Native Sons’ (1976) and ‘Finale’ (1976)
Solo recorded the albums ‘Oasis’ (1979), ‘Messina’ (1981), ‘Watching the River Run’ (1996), ‘Under a Mojito Moon Part 1’ (2009), ‘Live at the Clark Center for the Performing Arts’ (2012) and ‘In the Groove’ (2017)

Why he might be annoying:

He volunteered to replace Jim Palmer as Buffalo Springfield’s bassist without actually knowing how to play bass guitar. (Fortunately, he got some lessons from Joe Osborn of the Wrecking Crew and proved to be a quick study.)
He originally planned to produce Loggins’ debut album, then when it turned into a collaboration, he wanted it to be a one-time deal. It took label head Clive Davis to convince him and Loggins to make their partnership a longer-term project.
After the duo broke up, he had far less solo success than Loggins did.
He shares a name with Barack Obama’s White House Deputy Chief of Staff and re-election campaign manager.

Why he might not be annoying:

In addition to his own albums, he was a studio engineer on records by Joni Mitchell, Leon Russell, and Lee Michaels.
He avoided the drugs that were ubiquitous in rock in the 60s and 70s. (‘Stephen Stills called me ‘Mr. Straight Ahead’ because I didn’t indulge.’)
Unlike some music veterans, he has does not mind playing his older hits over and over: ‘I don’t have problems playing the older material of Buffalo Springfield, or Poco, or Loggins & Messina. I’m proud of it, and don’t get tired of it.’
He leads seven-day workshops for aspiring singers and songwriters.
He is also a painter and a carpenter.
