His family sued the company that made the faulty I-Rings responsible for the Challenger explosion and split over 7 million dollars with three other astronauts' families.
He was a 'Star Trek' geek and upon meeting George Takei, said that Sulu was his inspiration.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a Lieutenant Colonel for the United States Air Force.
Prior to the Challenger mission, he was noted as being the first Asian American in space.
His name was seen on the shuttlecraft carried aboard the starship Enterprise in three episodes on ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation.’
