Advocate

The Resume

    (1964-January 26, 2011)
    Born in Nakawala, Uganda
    Teacher and gay rights activist
Founding member and advocacy officer of Sexual Minorities Uganda
One of 100 homosexuals whose names, photos and addresses were published by 'Rolling Stone' [A Ugandan tabloid with no connection to the US music magazine] under the headline 'Hang Them' (October, 2010)
Was bludgeoned to death in his home

Why he might be annoying:

Although he received numerous death threats, police insisted before investigating that his murder was part of a burglary.
A scuffle broke out at his funeral when the preacher began denouncing homosexuality and making Sodom and Gomorrah comparisons, until gay rights activists in attendance grabbed the mic.
The villagers in his home town refused to bury him, at which point a group of Kato's friends, most of whom are gay, carried his coffin to the grave and buried it themselves.

Why he might not be annoying:

During a stay in South Africa, he was inspired by the repeal of the apartheid-era laws criminalizing homosexuality.
After organizing the first gay rights conference in Uganda, he was assaulted by the police.
The Ugandan High Court ordered Rolling Stone to pay him 1.5 million shillings for violating his right to privacy (January 3, 2011).
Barack Obama said, 'David showed tremendous courage in speaking out against hate. He was a powerful advocate for fairness and freedom.'
