The Resume

    (May 22, 1930-November 27, 1978)
Nickname was 'The Mayor of Castro Street'
First openly gay elected official of a large metropolitan U.S. city (San Francisco - 1977)
Assassinated along with S.F. Mayor George Moscone by Dan White (November 1978)

Why he might be annoying:

Because of his odd looks (big ears, feet and nose) his childhood nickname was 'Glimpy' (kids are cruel).
He ran unsuccessfully for S.F. Board of Supervisors (1973).
His assassination was overshadowed by a much bigger news event of the time; the mass murder/suicide in Guyana of the followers of the Rev. Jim Jones.
He predicted he would be murdered saying 'If a bullet should enter my brain, let that bullet destroy every closet door in the country.'
In fact, two bullets entered his brain, courtesy of former city supervisor White. White resigned earlier in protest over the passage of a gay rights bill he opposed.
When White was sentenced to just 7 years, gays took to the streets in the 'White Night Riots.'
Over 160 people were injured during the rioting.

Why he might not be annoying:

It was widely and inaccurately reported his birth name was Glimpy.
He joined the U.S Navy and was honorably discharged, but stated he was forced out because of his sexual orientation.
He was a powerful figure in the gay community and fought tirelessly for gay rights.
He formed alliances with labor unions and spearheaded a coalition between the gay and Chinese communities in San Francisco.
He was murdered by a disgruntled homophobe.
More than 10,000 filed past his casket as he laid in state at city hall.
More than 50,000 held a candlelight vigil later that evening. Joan Baez sang 'Amazing Grace.'
His murderer, Dan White, committed suicide a year after being paroled (1985).
'The Times of Harvey Milk' won the Academy Award for best documentary (1985).
He has schools named after him, an institute, and a plaza in San Francisco.
An opera about his life, 'Harvey Milk,' was composed (1995).
In 2000 the San Francisco Board of Supervisors approved assigning 'Historic Building' status to the camera shop he owned on Castro Street.
