One of the New Seven Wonders of the World (designated July 7, 2007)

Why Christ the Redeemer might be annoying:

With 220 steps to climb, they didn't install escalators until 2003.
At the end of the day, its just a standard depiction of Jesus without any surprises.
The original plan was to have Christ with a globe in one hand and a cross in the other (megalomaniac).
Paul Landowski and Gheorghe Leonida fought over credit for the design of the head and hands.
It has a pretty bad reputation when it comes to tourist safety.
It is a weather hazard and is constantly struck by lightning, requiring repairs - usually on the hands.
Its selection as one of the Seven 'New Wonders' was part of an intense lobbying campaign by Brazil, with over ten million Brazilians voting (ballot box stuffing).
It was chosen over several other arguably more deserving or qualified candidates (Stonehenge? Moai? Mount Rushmore?).

Why Christ the Redeemer might not be annoying:

It is a symbol of Christianity across the world.
Its sculptors were selected via a contest.
It took five years to complete.
The arms of Christ the Redeemer stretch 28 meters wide on each side.
The view from the top of the statue is breathtaking.
It is by far the most readily identifiable landmark in all of Brazil.
It is the largest Art Deco statue in the world.
It is often lit up to commemorate or honor, such as for frontline medical workers during coronavirus pandemic.
It underwent a massive restoration process, during which time it was attacked by vandals (2010).
