His band's name was taken from the drug Dexedrine.
The band changed their image from clean-cut Ivy-League types to ragged-looking Gypsy fiddlers.
One song on his album 'Don't Stand Me Down' features two full minutes of him and another band member chatting idly.
After the band shed several members and went underground, he became addicted to cocaine.
The cover of his solo album, 'My Beauty,' featured a grotesque, ridiculous photo of Rowland wearing a dress exposing his nipples, stockings, garters and a bikini bottom.

He and his band are regarded first and foremost as a group of extremely talented musicians.
They went underground for several years, exploring different styles and concepts of music.
He is heavily inspired by Irish folk music.
He kicked his drug habit.
