    He is often depicted as a villain in Arthurian legends.

    He may have worked as a Saxon interpreter for the Briton high king Vortigern.
    He shrewdly took advantage of a Britain left weakened after the withdrawal of the Roman army.
    He ruled peacefully for 25 years after his conquest until his death.
    Some historians identify him as King Arthur despite his traditionally being regarded as Arthur’s enemy.
