During World War II, he served at the war office and worked on allied propaganda radio.
He once said his only political view was 'Up with democracy and down with dictatorships.'
He wrote and directed plays which starred actors such as Marlon Brando, Charlton Heston, Paul Newman, Chico Marx, and Ethel Waters.
He ran 3 theaters, produced 300 plays and directed 100 of them.
