Why he might be annoying:

He ranked a less than impressive 423 out of 441 in his class at the Naval Academy, having accumulated so many demerits that he was in danger of not graduating.
He was suspended five days for leaving his ship without permission when he and Roberta Wright eloped to Tijuana (1933).
His constant swearing earned him the nickname 'Good Goddamn McCain.'
He enthusiastically encouraged the Nixon administration's 'incursions' into Cambodia and Laos, prompting Henry Kissinger to remark, 'We have to be careful about having McCain around the President, because he fires up the President.'

Why he might not be annoying:

During World War II, he earned the Silver Star for 'bravery under fire and aggressive fighting spirit.'
He and John McCain, Sr., were the first father and son to both become four-star admirals.
He was a strong advocate for continued US naval superiority.
He stayed fit by jumping rope 200 times a day.
Each year as CINCPAC, he would pay a Christmastime visit to the American troops serving closest to the demilitarized zone separating North and South Vietnam.
