Why he might be annoying:

    He claimed to have slept with 10,000 women, 8,000 of whom were prostitutes.
    He used 16 pseudonyms.
    As a journalist, he wrote a series of anti-semitic articles about the 'Jewish peril.'
    He was accused of collaborating with the Germans during World War II and was banned from publishing new works for five years.
    When Albert Camus won the Nobel Prize in Literature, he asked his wife, 'Can you believe that asshole got it and not me?'

Why he might not be annoying:

    His books were translated in 50 languages and sold over 600 million copies.
    He was known for his spare literary style in which he cut 'every word which is there just to make an effect.'
    Nobel Prize laureate Andre Gide called him 'the greatest and most genuine novelist of today's French literature.'
