    Before acting under his own name, he appeared on Broadway as Englishman 'Blade Stanhope Conway' and in Hollywood as Texan 'Bruce Hutchens.'
    He usually billed himself as Bob in his comedies and Robert for his dramatic roles.
    He became typecast as a carefree bachelor.
    He was married five times, divorced four.
    He met his last wife when she wrote to him after reading a tabloid story about his latest divorce.
    He was a health-food fanatic who often carried around a small suitcase of vitamins.

    He was taught to fly by his godfather, Orville Wright.
    He was a pilot with the US Army Air Corps in World War II and later with the Air Force Reserve.
    Proving he could handle drama as well as comedy, he won an Emmy for portraying 'Juror Number 8' in Twelve Angry Men (1955).
    He said of his devotion to healthy eating, 'I'd love to tell all those critics how well I feel today because of my diet, but they're all dead.'
