    Born in Moscow, Russia
    Son of a tea merchant
    Founded ‘The Blue Rider’ art movement with Franz Marc and Paul Klee (1910)
    Wrote On the Spiritual in Art’ (1912)
    Taught at the Bauhas school of fine arts and design in Munich (1922-33)
    Paintings include ‘The Blue Rider’ (1903), ‘Improvisation 7’ (1909), ‘Untitled’ (1910), ‘Composition’ (1918), ‘Composition VII’ (1923), ‘Yellow-red-blue’ (1925), ‘Complex-simple’ (1939) and ‘Sky Blue’ (1940)

Why he might be annoying:

    He followed Theosophy (the New Ageism of its time).
    He married his first cousin, whom who later abandoned for his student.
    He compared Moscow to a ‘mad tuba.’
    He likened painting to music and called his pictures ‘compositions.’
    He supported the Bolsheviks until they rejected his art as too ‘individualistic.’

Why he might not be annoying:

    His great-grandmother was a Mongolian princess.
    He gave up teaching law to learn painting at age 30.
    He was the first true abstract painter.
    He was an important art theorist as well as painter.
    His work was seized by the Nazis and condemned as degenerate.
    He believed artists were the prophets of their time.
