    She is of Irish, Jewish, Polish, and Czech descent.
    Her third place finish at the 2012 London Summer Olympics in the 400 meter freestyle swimming competition was the fastest time for an American 15 or 16 year old, beating Janet Evans's 1988 record at the Seoul Summer Olympics.
    Her gold medal-winning performance in the 800 meter swimming competition at the 2012 Summer Olympics was the second fastest time recorded in that race behind Rebecca Adlington's performance in Beijing four years earlier.
    As a result, she won 2012 Best Female Performance of the Year and Breakout Performer of the Year at the Golden Goggle Awards.
    She attended Stanford on a swimming scholarship.
    She was the youngest person honored in TIME magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World for 2016.
    Her gold-medal winning performance in the 800 meter freestyle competition in 2016 was a world record.
    She became the first swimmer to gold at the 200, 400, and 800 meter freestyle races all a single OIympic Games since Debbie Meyer in 2016.
