Why he might be annoying:

His nicknames included the Kid, the Six Million Dollar Man, and Stevie Wonder.
He was the namesake for a non-alcoholic version of a mint julep.
He recorded an album ('I knew I couldn't sing, but I had fun doing it') that his brother described as 'frightening.'
He had trouble making weight and moved to England where the weight limits are higher (1979).

Why he might not be annoying:

The move to England paid off, as he was named the British Champion Jockey three times (1984-85,1987), becoming the first American to win the honor in seven decades.
He was the only jockey to win horse racing's two most historic events, the Kentucky Derby (1978) and England's Espom Derby (1985,1987).
The head of the British Bloodstock Agency said, 'America couldn't have a better ambassador than Steve Cauthen.'
He is modest about his career, with his wife Amy noting, 'You would never know he was famous just by talking to him.'
