Hero

The Resume

    (1919-May 8, 1943)
    Born in Wyszkow, Poland
Commander of the Zydowska Organizacja Bojowa (ZOB; Jewish Fighting Organization)
Leader in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising (April-May, 1943)
Died during the Nazi attack on the ZOB command bunker at 18 Mila Street

Why he might be annoying:

He tried to open a route for Jews to escape to Palestine via Romania but was caught and jailed by Soviet authorities (1939).
His first attempt at founding a resistance group fell apart when the Communist members were rounded up in a series of arrests (April, 1942).
Monuments to the Uprising tend to depict him as more heroically muscular than the reality.

Why he might not be annoying:

He spent the months before the planned liquidation of the Warsaw Ghetto organizing the construction of a network of bunkers and tunnels to facilitate guerilla fighting.
He led a group of a dozen ZOB members in an attack that killed 50 German soldiers and disrupted the deportations (January 18, 1943).
The Nazis had planned for the final liquidation of the Warsaw Ghetto to last three days; despite their superior numbers and equipment, it took a month to defeat the uprising.
In one of his last letters he wrote, 'Our end is imminent. But while we are in possession of arms, we shall continue to resist.... We have rejected a German ultimatum to capitulate because the enemy knows no pity and we have no choice.' (April 23, 1943)
The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising inspired further rebellions in ghettos and extermination camps.
