Why he might be annoying:

Until the Civil War, his career was average.
Many of his battle tactics placed both his ship and crew at risk.
He often suffered from nausea at sea and during several key battles of the Civil War requested to be tied to the masts to keep upright.

Why he might not be annoying:

Both his parents died while he was young.
He took command of his first ship at age 10.
He rose from the rank of Midshipman to become a four star Admiral.
He was known for being calm under pressure.
He was quoted as saying to a hesitant Captain during battle, 'Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead.'
His victories in the Civil War served the Union by opening the Mississippi for supplies, scaring off European involvement and providing Union soldiers on land with a morale boost.
